Who’s behind Indigo Lawyers

Sam Ngai – founder

Sam holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy) from the University of Adelaide. He has practised exclusively in Family Law since 2010.

Sam started out as a commercial litigation lawyer at a mid-tier firm. There, he honed his commercial nous and sensitivity to cost-effectiveness often overlooked in Family Law. He then worked in ‘blue chip’ Family Law firms in Perth dealing with Family Law matters in the aftermath of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. This exposure gave Sam a deep understanding of how Family Law intersects with specialty areas such as inheritances (received before and after separation), intra-family loans, small businesses, family trusts and farming enterprises.

Sam then managed the Family Law division of a mid-sized Adelaide firm for over 10 years.

Sam also prides himself on finding practical solutions to parenting and custody disputes. He appreciates that parenting arrangements will kick on long after lawyers are out of the picture. They therefore must work when the legal letters and Court hearings have stopped. This often means putting strategic plans and safeguards in place to both now and in the future.

Career Highlights:

  • Successfully negotiating final parenting orders, by consent, in circumstances where the other parent unsuccessfully solicited the murder of Sam’s client part way through the proceedings;

  • Successfully obtaining the Court’s leave (i.e. permission) to allow Sam’s client to proceed with her property settlement action almost 20 years after separation; and
  • Obtaining final orders where Sam’s client received 94% of the net asset pool.

Natalie began her legal career working alongside Sam Ngai and is pleased to continue that professional relationship at Indigo Lawyers.

Having experienced the impact of divorce as a child, Natalie brings a unique empathy and understanding to her practice. She is committed to providing high-quality legal services that are both practical and cost-effective, helping clients navigate complex Family Law matters with clarity and compassion.

Career Highlights:

  • A career highlight for Natalie includes securing orders reversing the primary care arrangements for a three-year-old child, ultimately placing the child in the care of her client, the child’s father.
  • This case involved highly complex circumstances, with the whereabouts of both the mother and child unknown for an extended period. Natalie successfully obtained an arrest warrant for the mother, who was later apprehended by the Australian Federal Police.
  • Following the child’s safe recovery, Natalie’s meticulous preparation and strategic advocacy enabled the father and child to finally be reunited.
